Mustang Boys’ Soccer Team Wins 4A State Title
The Mustangs boys’ soccer team won its second state championship on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Danville.
Junior midfielder Josh Kim scored the first goal of the game 18 minutes into the match, giving the team a 1-0 lead. Sophomore center fullback Zachery Otwell scored again for CAC 61 minutes into the game.
Danville scored its only point of the championship game six minutes later. Junior goalie Caden Miller made 18 saves total to help secure a victory for the Mustangs.
“This means the world to me and my team,” said senior captain Landon Stafford after Friday’s win. “It’s taken us three tries, but I’m so excited that we finally got this one.”
The Mustangs competed in the Class 4A final the past two seasons. They fell to Green Forest last year and to Valley View in 2013.
“We weren’t as nervous about this one as we’ve been in the past because we knew what to expect,” Stafford said. “I had a great group of guys with me.”
Coach Fabian Mina said he was pleased with the outcome of the year.
“We went into the season with the goal of winning state,” Mina said. “I’m very proud of this group of guys and how they worked together to achieve their goal.”
